FreedomPop – Things to Remember

FreedomPop (often abbreviated as FP) is the first US based cellular provider to offer a free mobile plan in addition to their monthly plan offerings. I’ve been using them as a consumer mostly on the free side with a few devices on paid plans since they started back in 2012 offering USB and wifi hotspot service (Sprint 4G included for free @ 500 MB + MB from Freedom Friends up to 1.5 GB/month – optional 3G roaming plan available @ $3.99/month for hotspots and modems), 2013 when they started offering phone service (Sprint 3G/4G included for free @ 200 mins/500 SMS/500 MB + MB from Freedom Friends up to 1.5 GB/month), and the beginning of 2016 when they started offering their new Global SIM card (AT&T + T-Mobile + Roaming in 30+ countries 3G/4G included for free @ 200 mins/500 SMS/200 MB + MB from Freedom Friends up to 1.2 GB/month).

I use Google Voice and Hangouts for just about all calls and SMS/MMS so I have access to my calls, voicemails, and texts regardless of device. I primarily use a few global phones with dual SIM cards (two FP Global SIM cards on different accounts = double the data. Each on free plans with no additional FP services) with Google Voice but also keep a phone on me at all times with FP Premium Voice (native 2G voice) in case the rare scenario plays out where wifi and data access are inadequate or unavailable. Aside from the devices with premium voice (part of the Premium Plus service plan), all phone numbers I assign to the other devices are irrelevant in how I use them.

FP offers two similar free plans based on type of device (Sprint / GSM):
-Sprint phones (CDMA) are eligible for 200 mins / 500 SMS / 500 MB 3G/4G LTE data + additional data from Freedom Friends per month at no additional cost.
-Sprint data devices like wireless hotspots, USB modems, 4G routers/modems include only 500 MB LTE data + additional data from Freedom Friends per month at no additional cost. 3G access on these devices require a higher data plan which starts @ $3.99/month.
-GSM phones using the Global SIM (Voice/Text/Data Bundle) are eligible for 200 mins / 500 SMS / 200 MB 3G/4G LTE data + additional data from Freedom Friends per month at no additional cost.
-GSM data devices like the Global SIM (Data Only) and Global wireless hotspots include only 200 MB LTE data + additional data from Freedom Friends per month at no additional cost.

Things to remember:
-FP offers a ton of great promotions on USB modems, hotspots, phones, and SIM cards and is currently working with Intel to develop their own brand phone.
-Phones must be network unlocked and Sprint/AT&T/T-Mobile capable
-All GSM mobile devices must be network unlocked to use the Global SIM card.
-All phones are eligible to make/receive calls to/from international numbers up to 100 minutes for free per month in addition to the 200 minute allocation based on the device’s country calling code. This is a free add-on which can be added in the International menu.
-Sprint BYOD requires a one time $20 activation charge unless using a BYOD promotion.
-The purchase of a FreedomPop device (price and device selection varies) or Global SIM ($0.99 – $9.99 depending on promo) does not require an activation charge. Purchased equipment from FP should ship activated.
-Number porting to FP requires a one time $9.99 charge.
-Number porting to Google Voice requires a one time $20 charge.
-Changing device phone number after initial free number selection requires a one time $4.99 charge.
-Most FP device purchases and promotions place the device on a one month plan and service trial which can be downgraded at any time before the end of the billing cycle. Remember, there are two things which need to be downgraded before the device is completely free from any future charges.
-Automatic top-up can only be disabled if the device has a $5+ credit in the account which will disable data access once the device dips below 100 MB of available data to prevent overage. Otherwise once the device dips below 100 MB the account is topped up @ $15-$20 and standard overage applies ($0.02/MB) which is charged from that credit.
-Plans can be upgraded/downgraded at anytime if more mins/texts/data and service options are needed (up to a 3 hour delay on usage reporting between device, carrier, and FP applies).
-Calls over wifi do not count against the device’s available data but does count against its allocation of minutes.
-Calls over the FP dialer should receive a minor data (MB) credit every so often to compensate for data used on cellular.
